| ADULT HOCKEY |
| Adult hockey is the fastest paced recreational sport around. The
friendships created from being involved in hockey last a lifetime. The
"hockey family" here in Fresno has grown by leaps and bounds and
continues to grow. This page gives an overview on adult hockey here at the
facility, levels of play, schedules and cost. |

| ADULT HOCKEY CLASS |
| In addition to our skating school classes which primarily focus
on skating, we offer an adult hockey class which incorporates skating with
learning how to play the game. Shooting, stickhandling, passing, one-on-one's
and team play are just a few of the things taught in our class. The class is
generally held every Monday night from 7:30pm to 8:30pm. There are exceptions
when other special events or holidays happen to fall on a Monday, however
that does not happen often. Check here for schedule changes to this class. |

| LEVEL 3 (BEGINNER LEAGUE) |
| All players in the league are rated by their own level of play
and put onto a team which will make their hockey experience enjoyable. Teams
are drafted each season keeping the teams as even as possible. The idea is to
have a good time and meet new people that want to play hockey and improve
their own skills. Games for the beginner league are scheduled on Sunday
evenings or Monday nights. Presently we have six teams in the beginner league
and it continues to grow. A number of women play in this league making it a
co-ed league. |

| LEVEL 2 (INTERMEDIATE LEAGUE) |
| This is the largest league at Gateway Ice Center, consisting of
eight teams. This league is for players who have too much skill for level 3
or players that have improved enough to leave level 3. Each team has a
"team rep" that works with the Hockey Director to fill their
roster. Most players that have been playing hockey for a number of years are
participating in level 2. Games for the intermediate league are scheduled on
Sunday evenings or Monday nights. |

| LEVEL 1 (ADVANCED LEAGUE) |
| This is our high comp league. Players with junior, college, pro,
tier midget players and even former and sometimes current Fresno Falcons
players play in this league. The league consists of four teams that play
their games on Thursday nights. This is a fairly quick game that will give
the good player a decent workout. |

| THE 2 LINE
PASS RULE IS BEING ELIMINATED |
| USA Hockey
has made an emphasis for referees to call some infractions tighter. The FAHL
will be asking |
| officials
to continue to call the games prior to USA Hockey Emphasis except with
tighter reins on stick infractions. |
| PLEASE BE
SURE TO PICK UP AND READ THE NEW" STANDARD OF PLAY AND RULES |
| EMPHASIS"
BEFORE YOU PLAY YOUR FIRST GAME. IT IS ALSO WRITTEN BELOW. |
| FAHL STANDARD OF PLAY AND RULES EMPHASIS |
| USA Hockey has mandated some very drastic rule changes for the
upcoming season. We feel some of the
rule changes (when it comes to penalties) are warranted, but some have taken
too much away from the game to implement them all at one time. The adult hockey league in Fresno wants to
make the adult hockey program as enjoyable and injury free as possible
without jeopardizing the heritage of this great game. |
| The FAHL will be asking all officials to continue to call the
games as they have in the past and to the best of their ability. We will be asking them to tighten some
calls when it pertains to stick work and in front of the net collisions. |
| HOOKING |
A player cannot use
their stick against an opponent’s body (Puck Carrier or non- puck carrier) to
gain a positional Advantage. Examples |
Tug or pulls on the
body, arm or hands of an opponent which allows for space between players to
diminish or affect opponents stride. |
| In
other words: No more hooks from behind to slow someone up even
a little. |
| SLASHING |
The use of the stick
will be for playing the puck only. Any
stick contact with the hands or body will be called a slash. You cannot tap shin guards or pants when
back checking. Lifting the stick from
underneath will be allowed. Any hard
slashes to the stick below the hands with no attempt to legally play the puck
will be called. Placing your stick
over an opponent’s stick in front of the net or on draws is legal. |
| TRIPPING |
No change in the way
tripping will be called. The only adjustment pertains to in front of the net
play. Players cannot put the stick in
between opponent’s legs which will impede the progress of the opponent. |
No trying to spin or
eliminate an opponent in front by putting your stick between his legs. If he trips or must spin out of this a
penalty may be called. |
| INTERFERENCE |
The major change will
be in front of the net. Having two
hands on your stick and bringing it up to help you move or clear an opponent
may result in a penalty being called.
In other words if your stick is horizontal to the ice and is used on
an opponent you may receive a penalty. |
| To make a long story short, if you keep your stick down and to
yourself there is no rule changes. If
you are the type that likes to try and slow a player down when back checking
or give a little tug before a shot or pass you will find yourself in the
penalty box a little more. |
